Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

It is the question we get asked more than any other, so here is the straight answer: yes, it hurts.

That is not the whole story though, and the detail is genuinely useful, because how much it hurts is fairly predictable once you know what drives it.

Why it hurts at all

Lasers used for hair removal are attracted to pigment. The darker the hair, the better the laser can see it, and the better your results will be.

That is also the source of the sensation. Energy absorbed by pigment becomes heat, and heat is what you feel.

It is why blonde, white and grey hair does not respond well. The laser effectively passes straight through, because there is not enough pigment to absorb the energy.

Your skin tone changes the experience

Melanin in your skin is pigment too, and the laser sees that as well as the hair.

Olive and darker skin carries more melanin, so treatment requires a longer, deeper wavelength. Those wavelengths tend to be more uncomfortable. If you have darker skin and dark hair, expect more sensation than someone with light skin and dark hair.

Lighter skin allows a shorter, shallower wavelength, which is typically less painful.

None of this makes treatment unsuitable. It just means the honest answer to "how much will it hurt" depends on who is asking.

Some areas are simply worse

For women, the bikini area is usually the most uncomfortable. Most people describe it as a rubber band snapping against the skin with each pulse.

For men, the face and neck are the worst of it. Neck skin is thinner, and the hair there is dark and coarse, which makes a bigger target for the laser.

The pattern holds generally: anywhere with dark, coarse hair will be more uncomfortable than anywhere with fine hair.

What helps

A topical numbing agent can be applied to the areas that need it, and most treatments do not require it at all.

There is a trade-off worth knowing about, which is that numbing can reduce how effective the treatment is. It is a conversation to have at your consultation rather than a default.

We also offer nitrous sedation. If anxiety about the pain is the thing that has stopped you booking, this is worth asking about. It takes the edge off considerably, and you can still drive yourself home afterwards.

Two things that genuinely help regardless: the discomfort stops the moment the pulse does, so it does not linger the way people expect, and icing afterwards settles any redness or swelling faster.

The short version

Laser hair removal is uncomfortable rather than unbearable, and the level depends on your skin tone, your hair colour and coarseness, and the area being treated.

Most people find it far more manageable than they had braced for, and sessions are short.

Still worried about it?

Say so at your consultation. We will talk you through what your specific areas are likely to feel like, and what we can do to make it easier, including nitrous if you want it.
