Laser Hair Removal in Denver
The question we hear most is some version of "will it actually work on my skin and my hair?" It is the right question, because the honest answer is that it depends on matching the right laser to you.
Here is how that works, and what to expect.
Why the laser has to match your skin
At your consultation we determine your skin type using the Fitzpatrick scale, then choose the laser from there.
Lighter skin generally responds best to a 755nm Alexandrite laser. Darker skin needs a 1064nm Nd:YAG. We have both on site, which is the part that matters. A clinic with only one wavelength has to treat every skin type with it, and that is where poor results and burns come from.
A word about IPL
You will see IPL marketed as laser hair removal. It is not a laser.
IPL cannot reliably tell the difference between the pigment in your skin, including a suntan, and the pigment in your hair. That raises the risk of burns and of hypopigmentation, which is loss of skin colour. IPL should only ever be used on Fitzpatrick skin types 1 to 3, and never on types 4 to 6.
We use true lasers for hair removal. You can see our full range of laser treatments here.
How it actually works
The laser energy passes harmlessly through your skin and is absorbed by the pigment in your hair. That heats the follicle and disables it, so the hair does not grow back.
Because the energy targets pigment in the hair, the contrast between your hair and your skin is what makes the treatment effective, and it is why wavelength selection matters so much.
Which areas can be treated
Effectively all of them, from head to toe, including knuckles, ears and nose.
The areas we treat most often are lip and chin, hairline, full face or beard, neck, underarms, arms, bikini line, Brazilian, thighs, lower legs and full legs.
How many sessions, and how far apart
Most people need somewhere between four and eight treatments, spaced roughly four to five weeks apart.
That spacing is not arbitrary. Hair grows in cycles, and a laser can only disable a follicle that is actively growing. Treating on the right interval for that body area is how you catch each follicle in the right phase. After the initial course some people need occasional touch-ups or ongoing maintenance.
Once an area has been treated, shedding of those hairs is usually complete within one to two weeks.
What it feels like, and the side effects
Expect some level of discomfort during treatment. Afterwards, itching, redness and swelling around the area are normal and should settle within three days.
We generally do not use numbing creams, because they reduce how effective the treatment is. Icing the area afterwards relieves the side effects faster.
Most of the risk in laser hair removal comes down to being treated with the wrong wavelength or the wrong settings for your skin type, which is exactly what the consultation exists to prevent.
